Simplifying Payments, Growing the Game: PlayHQ and TeamPay Unite

Contents

PlayHQ’s acquisition of TeamPay streamlines game-day payments, reduces admin, and makes community sport more accessible for players, admins, and organisations.

PlayHQ has always been committed to making community sport easier to manage and more accessible for everyone. That mission took a major step forward with our recent acquisition of TeamPay, Australia’s leading game-day payment platform. This move isn’t just about expanding our product offering—it’s about breaking down barriers to participation, streamlining administration, and helping our partner sports grow through flexible and frictionless payment options.

    Why We Acquired TeamPay

For years, sporting organisations have been looking for ways to simplify game payments, particularly for casual and social competitions like mixed netball, adult basketball, AFL9s, touch rugby, and futsal. Many players in these formats don’t register for a full season—they pay to play when it suits them. TeamPay has been the go-to solution for these types of payments, replacing manual processes and ATM runs for hundreds of clubs, leagues, and associations across Australia.

At PlayHQ, we had already begun developing our own game payment solution, but acquiring TeamPay allows us to accelerate this offering while continuing to focus on other priorities, like simplifying registration and streamlining payments for our partner sports.

    What This Means for PlayHQ

Bringing TeamPay into the PlayHQ ecosystem strengthens our position as the leading competition and payment platform for grassroots sports. With 70% of TeamPay’s customers already using PlayHQ, this integration will create a more unified experience for administrators and participants. Over the coming months, we’ll focus on deeper integration between TeamPay and PlayHQ to create a seamless payment experience within our apps and administrator portals.

    Benefits for Partner Sports

For national and state sporting bodies, unifying game payments under PlayHQ presents a massive opportunity. Governing bodies worldwide are looking to grow participation through casual and social formats. Now, they can manage all registration and game-day payments in one place—improving visibility, streamlining financial processes, and making sport more accessible to new and returning players.

A Win for Admins and Volunteers

One of the biggest challenges for grassroots sport administrators is chasing payments. With TeamPay integrated into PlayHQ, manual follow-ups will become a thing of the past. Clubs, leagues, and associations will have real-time visibility of payments, automated tracking, and a streamlined process for managing game fees—all within the platform they already use to run their competitions.

    Impact on Participants

For players and teams, this acquisition means more flexibility. Whether registering for a season or paying game by game, they’ll have a secure, frictionless payment experience. Game payments will be fully integrated within PlayHQ’s platform, making it easier than ever for casual and social players to participate in sport without the hassle of cash or manual payments.

    Looking Ahead

In the short term, TeamPay will continue to be supported by Inyerpocket, the agency that built the platform, and a new TeamPay app will be released this month. Over the course of the year, we’ll focus on a deeper integration to ensure a seamless experience for both administrators and participants.

Tim MacKinnon, CEO of PlayHQ, is excited about what this means for community sport:

We have partnered with TeamPay for many years, but as one company, we can now create a truly unified platform for players and administrators. There’s a huge opportunity to simplify payments, fee splitting, and collection for governing bodies, and ultimately remove friction in grassroots sports.

TeamPay Co-Founder Andrew Roberts echoed this sentiment:

Since 2019, we’ve worked to offer a simple and secure way for players and teams to handle payments for their games. Partnering with PlayHQ allows us to scale that vision and support the hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy casual sport each week across Australia.

Andrew and fellow Co-Founder Tim Roberts have officially joined PlayHQ, where they’ll continue to grow game payments in Australia and beyond. We’re thrilled to have them on board and excited about the opportunities this acquisition unlocks for grassroots sport.

Stay tuned as we continue working to make sport more accessible, more inclusive, and easier to manage for everyone involved.
